Ukrainian duo creates mindbending “miniature” time-lapse of Kiev

Professional photographers Efim Graboy and Daria Turetski hold a deep affection for their home city of Kiev. Unfortunately all many people know about Kiev (aside from the chicken dish) is tragedy. Kiev’s biggest points in world history were not events a city would want to be known for: the battle of Kiev in 1941 in which 600,000 Soviet soldiers lost their lives and the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown that happened just 62 miles away.

So, it’s understandable why people don’t have a rosy picture of the European capital in their minds, a picture that Graboy and Turetski wanted to change dramatically. To accomplish this, they created the “miniature” time-lapse video posted above. The result of their work shows a city that has not only recovered from its past, but has thrived and is a beautiful, vibrant place.

Threeshoot studio

Shot over a period of 5 days and two nights, “MiniLook Kiev” as the video is entitled, has a charming whimsical quality thanks to the heavy post-processing Graboy and Turetski applied to the 4,500 images that made the cut into the piece. Using the ever popular “tilt-shift” technique, the duo created scenes that look like miniatures that you would see as part of a model train setup rather than living and breathing people. The effect is astounding and communicates the beauty of the people and culture of Kiev.

Using a Canon 550D, the two photographers captured over 25,000 different frames during their shooting period (thank goodness for the digital age). Graboy says that the most difficult tasks the two had besides the post-production editing was deciding which shots were to hit the cutting room floor.

The two photographers have teamed up with another photog friend to create a new studio called ThreeShot, they hope that they can employ a tilt lens for their next video project instead of relying on software to make it happen. If you’re like me, you don’t care what the new studio makes, just as long as it comes quickly!

Kiev stadium

It’s pretty impressive to know that this video was created using one camera and a tripod, even more so when you hear that they only used a single 28-80 mm lens. It reveals the amount of talent Graboy and Turetski have, and bodes well for the future of their business!
