Geek deals: $149 off Dell’s Ultrasharp 27-inch monitor

Dell U2711

Is resolution really that important? If the iPad 3 has taught us anything, it’s that ridiculous dpi, while not a necessity, is still really freaking impressive. And while monitor resolution hasn’t quite caught up to the retinal level, WQHD, or 2560×1440, is quite the step up from normal full HD (1080p).

The Dell UltraSharp U2711 27-inch Monitor makes a good case for the extra pixels. Not only is this monitor a professional grade display worthy of expert photo- and video-editing use, it also comes factory-tuned with Adobe RGB and RGBs modes, with a billion-plus color gamut.

It has a typical 6ms response time, and a 80000:1 contrast ratio which speaks less of the actual contrast quality and more of individual manufacturer standards. Each company has their value system and there’s often no correlation between the number benchmarks for each. You’ll just have to take Dell’s word for on the “great color intensity.” And given what else we know about this high-end monitor, it’s probably true.

The IPS panel allows for a wide range of viewing angles, and there’s a wide range or tilt and anti-glare coating for a breezy viewing experience. There’s also no short of connectivity options, including HDMI, DisplayPort with audio, DVI-D, USB 2.0, and VGA.

The UltraSharp U2711 might not seem like a bargain for a price that seems more in line with a full-blown HDTV, but for professionals who want a top-flight monitor for working in media, it’s one to consider.
