Quantic Dream stuns GDC with real-time PS3 Kara demo

Developer Quantic Dream has already earned itself a good reputation with the release of Heavy Rain. If you were keeping an eye on the company before that game was released, you’ll remember the awesome The Casting demo used to show off their tech back in 2006. You can see it below:

Now it seems Quantic are doing the same: releasing a video showing off their tech, but without it relating to any actual title in development. The thing is, the hardware and tech has moved on since Heavy Rain in 2010, and this new video looks that much more stunning than The Casting did. The demo is called Kara, and you can watch it at the top of this post. I highly recommend you switch to full-screen HD before doing so.

The video looks great, but what makes it so impressive is the fact everything you see happening is being rendered in real-time on a PS3. There’s no render farm processing a finished video here: this is on-the-fly with Quantic’s tech.

The demo was shown by Quantic’s David Cage during a talk on emotion in games at GDC 2012. The tech on display is actually the recording of performance art using motion capture, but managing to do the body and facial movements in a single take. Usually the two are captured separately to get the required level of detail. The actual output on the PS3 is Quantic’s new proprietary engine.

The fact that the Kara demo doesn’t give a hint of what Quantic’s new game will be doesn’t really matter. What does matter is just how good that game will look whatever it turns out to be.
