MBA Mondays Series: The Board Of Directors

John Revay sent me an email suggesting I write a post on The Board Of Directors. I've got a better idea, a whole MBA Mondays blog series on this topic. I have come to enjoy the series format for MBA...

Visualized: Huawei crafts smartphone pegasus, makes no mention of quad-core horsepower

Crafted from 1,000 (or 3,000, depending on who you talk to) smartphones, Huawei's symybol for this year's MWC proudly stands in squarely in the middle of the mobile madness. However, the chinese handset manufacturer still remains a bit of a dark horse in this year's selection of OEM fillies.

Apple Product Event Announced for March 7 in San Francisco

Apple will be holding a product announcement event in San Francisco on March 7th, as many had predicted. The image embedded in the email invite hints at what's in store with only a single phrase: "We have something you really have to see. And touch."

Personal Activity Monitor tracks time you spend using desktop apps

personalactivitymonitor
Up until a couple of years ago, I used to turn to RescueTime to figure out how I spend my time online. Then it got too complex, and I stopped using it. Personal Activity Monitor is like a vastly dumbed-down version of RescueTime, and I mean that as a compliment. It's free and bare-bones -- all it does is track what applications you're using and for how long.

A big drawback at this point is that it doesn't integrate with Web browsers to help you analyze how you spend your time on the Web. Still, if your work doesn't require constant Web app use, knowing how long you've used a browser overall might be enough to help you manage your time.

This is far from the only application in this space -- alternatives such as Slife and Chrometa are full-featured and impressive -- but PAM is good option for those who want a nice, simple tracker.

waterBOB Emergency Drinking Water Storage

In North Carolina, we are subjected to everything that Mother Nature can throw at us other than volcanoes.    We are often warned to prepare for some impending bad weather by gathering up supplies and by filling up the bathtub with water.  Normally I wouldn’t consider using bathtub water for anything other than flushing the [...]

In-app payment support arrives on Android

Right on cue, Google has launched in-app payment support for Android applications. Developer testing began last week, and now many popular apps -- like the ones pictured above -- can begin charging users for add-on functionality, content, or whatever the heck else they feel is worthy of additional bits of your pocket change. If you were wondering, Google will take the same 30% cut that Apple takes from in-app purchases.

At last we can buy individual issues in Comics with minimal fuss!

OpenWays already got the world of smartphones and hotel keys more acquainted, now it wants to make them even more intimate. Working with NXP semiconductors, OpenWays has announced it's bringing a little near-field magic to its Mobile Key solution. Chase, Capital One and Barclaycard join as launch partners for Isis mobile payment service

The Isis mobile payment service backed by AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon may have been a bit overshadowed by Google Wallet in recent months, but it's still on track for a "mid-2012" trial launch in Austin, Texas and Salt Lake City, Utah, and it's now gotten a boost from a trio of new financial partners. Chase, Capital One and Barclaycard confirmed today that they'll each support the NFC-based service and let folks load their credit, debit and prepaid cards into their Isis Mobile Wallet, joining existing partners Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. Unfortunately, any specific launch details beyond that still remain a bit on the light side, with Isis only promising that a national rollout will follow sometime after the initial trial launch.

ZTE PF112 hands-on

ZTE's other handset launch of note at MWC this year was the PF112 (pictured at right next to SGS 2.) First take away here was the 4.5-inch 1028 x 720 HD display which was really bright and clear -- and again we were a little shocked by the dichotomy in build quality of the sets we're seeing from ZTE. Quad-band GSM radios, triple-band HSPA+ were on hand as well as an 8 megapixel rear-facing cam, all the wireless connectivity one could ask for and even an FM radio thrown in for good measure. Housing quality is fine, bezel size about on par with its neighbor in the pic above and fit and finish also looking sharp. Follow the break for some more pictures of this Android 4.0 device.

Printopia 2 for Mac Mobile Printing Software Review

We have been promised a paperless office for years now. Perhaps it will never happen. With the iPad, I have found that many of the documents I used to print out I now carry on my device or store online in a service such as Evernote or Dropbox. But, on occasion, I'll want to print something from my iPhone or iPad, and there's no AirPrint printer available, or I really just want to send a screen shot to my Mac. How do I do it? Printopia, a Mac application from ecamm to the rescue!

FBI deactivates about 3,000 GPS tracking devices, loses sight of your car

FBI deactivates GPS trackersFollowing a January ruling by the US Supreme Court, the FBI has deactivated some 3,000 GPS units that were potentially infringing on the Fourth Amendment. The decision seems to be making waves in the U.S. Justice Department. Andrew Weissmann, FBI General Counsel, says some of the devices have been difficult to retrieve, as the vehicles they were once tracking now move undetected. The FBI has sought temporary permission to reactivate some of the devices to locate and retrieve the hardware. Weissmann says the FBI is also developing new guidelines regarding the legality of its agent's actions -- from the application and use of tracking devices, to the extent a suspect's garbage can be searched before the agent is committing trespass. In short, the FBI is working really hard not to violate your legal right to privacy. If you happen to find something weird under you car, give 'em a call. They'd probably like it back.
