Kindle Fire will launch with Hulu Plus support

We have known that the Kindle Fire would launch with a better app selection than the Nook Tablet. What we didn’t know was that all of the Nook’s advantages on the software front would be matched by Amazon’s tablet. The last piece of that puzzle comes with today’s confirmation that the Fire will support Hulu Plus.

Amazon hadn’t mentioned anything about either Netflix or Hulu Plus before this week, so it was speculated that they might not support the third-party streaming services. They both rival Amazon Prime streaming, which Amazon is counting on selling to help subsidize the tablet.

However, after the Nook Tablet was announced this week with integrated Netflix and Hulu support, Amazon apparently decided that the capabilities were worth touting. The company said earlier this week that Netflix would play on the Kindle Fire, and now we have today’s Hulu news.

In addition to the streaming services, Amazon also said that their tablet will be supporting Rhapsody, Pandora, Twitter, Facebook, and the Weather Channel. They also said that the Fire will play nicely with games from Zynga, Popcap, E.A., and console-cloner Gameloft.

As the above titles are all Amazon AppStore standards, none are particularly surprising to see on the Kindle Fire. The tablet will use their app marketplace–which has been available on Android phones and tablets since March–in place of the Android Market.

As with Netflix, we could see a delicate balancing act with Amazon’s attitude towards Hulu Plus. It benefits the company to tout their support for the apps when customers are deciding between the Fire and the Nook Tablet. But then it starts to hurt them if customers who have already purchased the Fire are passing on Amazon Prime subscriptions in favor of Netflix and Hulu. Amazon is banking on Prime’s prominent position in the tablet’s UI to help with this.

The Kindle Fire is available for pre-order on Amazon, and will also be available in a variety of brick and mortar stores, such as Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and Staples. Its official release date is next Tuesday, November 15.
