It turns out Apple decided to keep the name of the company it bought to help build its voice recognition technology. Siri will be the vocal assistant in iOS 5.
Phil Schiller took the stage at the Let’s Talk iPhone event today to demonstrate just how slick the iOS voice recognition will be. Not surprisingly, they’re framing it as more of a personal assistant than as a technology.
Schiller asked his iPhone 4S “What is the weather like today?” He asks for the hourly forecast, and it gives him what he asked for. Phil wondered “do I need a raincoat?” and Siri answered “It looks like rain today.”
The demonstration went on to cover alarm setting (“wake me up at 6am tomorrow”), restaurant locating (“find me a Greek restaurant in Palo Alto”), and messages (“read my message,” and reply “I can do Friday’”). He also showed the integration of Siri with Calendar and Reminders, showing the scope of what this can do. It even looked up Wikipedia entries and utilized Wolfram Alpha to answer complex mathematical formulas.
Of course Siri also handles standard dictation, which may not be as sexy as turning your iPhone into a personal assistant, but it is likely to come in handy.
This looks like it can really change things. Android has had quality voice recognition for ages, and several iOS apps (including the Nuance-powered Dragon Dictation) will do the same, but this takes it to a whole new level of personal interaction. I’ve long believed that when Apple was finally going to bring voice recognition to iOS, it wouldn’t be some half-way effort. This is what many of us have been waiting for.
