R2-D2 Flash Drive Cufflinks Are Obviously the Best Cufflinks In the Galaxy [Star Wars]

If I had to wear a suit to work, I would definitely buy these R2-D2 USB flash drive cufflinks. They can store 2GB of data each, which is pretty good. In fact, I can't think of a better cufflink—except a pair that also made R2 sounds. More »

June 1, 2012 (9:36 a.m.) - We're investigating malware report that's causing Google to block forums.androidcentral.com. The blog is currently unaffected.

  • Update (10:24 a.m.) - We've identified the issue and have ordered a Sentinel strike.
  • Update (11:25 a.m.) - Google decided to treat one of our ad partner's javascript code as suspicious. The code has been removed and we have requested Google to rescan the site. We have no reports of the ad partner actually serving malware, and the site should be safe to visit.
  • Update (2:30 p.m.) - We're seeing occasional malware warnings on the blog side now. Again, there's no malicious code -- we're just waiting on Google to rescan things. You can visit the site without worry.
  • Update (5 p.m.) - Per Google: A review for this site has finished. The site was found clean. The badware warnings from web search are being removed. Please note that it can take some time for this change to propagate.

Windows 8 App Store images leaked?

windows 8 app store
Windows 8 images continue to leak onto the Internet, despite Microsoft's wallpaper-based pleas to those with access to the early releases. Today's installment courtesy CNBeta shows the upcoming Windows App Store, which will likely feature prominently in Windows 8.

We've got our doubts about the authenticity of the image. In addition to showing several of the built-in games which already ship with Windows, Opera is listed -- and a competing browser seems like an odd inclusion this early on. Of course, with the browser ballot still in place in the EU for quite some time, Microsoft would probably need to include rivals like Opera and Firefox to stay out of trouble. We're also not sure why Clickgamer is shown beneath Angry Birds instead of Rovio -- the game's actual publisher.

It's still early, of course, so it's entirely possible that the Windows App Store image is genuine but merely using placeholder images and text for now. Anyone else thinking Windows Marketplace might be a more logical name? You know, to keep things consistent with Windows Phone and keep Apple's legal eagles at bay.

Konstruct for iOS creates generative augmented reality art with your voice

Konstruct generative augmented reality art for iOS
If you have an artistic temperament, but you weren't blessed with steady hands or an eye for color, Konstruct might be the app for you. Not only does the iPhone app let you produce generative art using words, warbles and whistles, but it also uses augmented reality to bring your artistic creation to life.

To get started, you first need to print out the Konstruct marker and place it wherever you'd like to create your AR sculpture -- it could be on your living room wall, or on the floor of your bathroom, it doesn't matter. Open the app, point your iPhone at the marker, and start making some noises! Once you're done, you can save your creation, or simply wipe the slate clean and start again.

The volume of your voice affects the size of the shapes that are drawn on the screen, and you can move your head around to alter the path of your 'brush' -- but to change the shape of your brush or modify the color palette you have to use a menu. Without knowledge of the app's internal workings, it's hard to say what the actual difference between whistling, talking and singing is -- and judging by the developer's affinity for whistling in the demo video (after the break), the app probably doesn't perform that much analysis on your input.

Still, Konstruct is just a prototype! A later version could do away with menus and rely entirely on the location, tonality, quality and amplitude of your voice -- and judging by the the words of the developer, James Alliban, there is definitely more in store for Konstruct: "The idea of transforming entire cities into user generated virtual art galleries really appeals to me. I see Konstruct as an early prototype that will hopefully be realised in this form in the future."

Download Konstruct for free from the App Store (iPhone 3GS and 4 only)

[Thanks to Richard for the tip!]

Verizon Motorola XOOM ICS update has begun rolling out

XOOM

Update: When we said "Has begun rolling out," that should be pronounced "Coming June 4," as just stated by Verizon. Let the beatings begin.

If you're a Motorola XOOM owner on Verizon, we've got great news: The 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) update has begun rolling out is nigh. We saw the Verizon update roadmap a couple weeks ago, suggesting that the ICS update could drop at any time, so it's nice to see it hit not too long afterwards.

There are a lot of enhancements that come with this update. The four features that Verizon is taking the most time to point out are:

  • The Launch Bar, which allows you to drop applications, shortcuts and folders into and access from any homescreen
  • Usage Center, which Verizon has been highly touting as of late. It lets you keep track of your data usage
  • Notification Pop Up Box, which contains all of your inboxes and notifications in one streamlined box
  • Folders, you've all seen ICS folders by now, so you'll get to create and use them on the XOOM screen as well

There are many other benefits from the update though. Here is a list:

  • 4G LTE upgrade issues resolved
  • Exchange/Activesync policy improvements
  • EAS security and sync fixed
  • Email search
  • Updated browser with faster rendering
  • Updated People application
  • Improved text input
  • Improved stability
  • App launcher has been redesigned to allow app dragging to uninstall or disable
  • Launch camera from lockscreen option
  • Single mode panorama mode
  • Photo editor added in Gallery application
  • New font (Roboto)

There is lots to like about this update, so if you have a XOOM, keep an eye out. If you haven't received it yet, sit tight, it's rolling out gradually. It is an OTA update, so all you have to do is go to Settings -> About Tablet -> System Update to check to see if you can get it.

If you have it and want to brag about the new features or just want to see how others are liking the update, sing out in our Motorola XOOM Forum.
