Motorola MOTOACTV software update allows for pairing with non-Moto devices

Good news for fitness junkies who like to mix and match their gadget brands: MotoACTV's accompanying application will now work on pretty much all Android phones, and not just those that happen to be made by Motorola. The only catch so far as we can tell is that your handset must run Android 2.1 (Eclair) or later -- a near-certainty in 2012. Already rocking a Moto device? You might still want to take the time to install this update, as it brings several other new features, including the ability track fitness goals on your phone, as well as use your handset to configure WiFi networks for your MotoACTV. You can also plan workouts on your device of choice, access them on MotoACTV and then send your workout data back to the phone. So far, the Engadget staff can confirm the update works just fine on LG devices, so we're optimistic the latest software will play nice with the Samsungs, HTCs and Huaweis of the world. Hit up the source link below to get your download on and as always, let us know how it goes.

UK hacking accused breaches bail

Ryan Cleary outside courtRyan Cleary is accused of hacking the UK's Serious Organised Crime Agency website

A 19-year-old Briton accused of being part of hacking group Lulzsec is being held in prison after breaching his bail conditions, his lawyer has said.

Ryan Cleary was arrested in June 2011 and banned from using the internet.

He is said to have contacted hacker Hector Xavier Monsegur, known as "Sabu", who had been working as an FBI informant following his own arrest.

Mr Cleary is being held at Chelmsford Prison, in Essex, and is due to reappear before a judge in May.

He had been rearrested on 5 March, a day before the FBI announced that Mr Monsegur had been detained and was working undercover.

News of Mr Monsegur's arrest rippled through the hacking community. The 28-year-old had been a trusted member of the tight-knit Lulzsec group - an offshoot of global hacktivist collective Anonymous.

Mr Cleary stands accused of, among other charges, hacking the website of the UK's Serious Organised Crime Agency.

'Autism'

Mr Cleary, who is from Wickford in Essex, is alleged to have set up a distributed denial of service (DDOS) attack on the site on 20 June.

A DDOS attack typically involves flooding a target website with data, in an attempt to overwhelm it so it cannot serve its legitimate users.

Following his arrest and release on bail, Mr Cleary was instructed to observe a curfew between 21:00 BST and 07:00 BST. When he was able to leave the house, he had to be electronically tagged and accompanied by a parent.

His lawyer, Karen Todner, said in June: "Ryan has last week at court been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, which is a form of high functioning autism.

"He will now be provided with the professional support that he needs. His obvious intelligence can now be channelled into a worthwhile pursuit."

Ms Todner added that Mr Cleary was looking forward to going "home to his mum, his cats and his books".

Apple and publishers reportedly willing to abandon iBooks “agency model” to appease Justice Department

Under the traditional book-selling model, retailers like B&N, Amazon, and others could get 50% or more of the revenue from the sale of a book. Under Apple's "agency model", they get 30%. The traditional model is retailer-centric. Apple's model is publisher-centric. This upsets the US Justice Department. Under the old model, the retailer set the price and so could sell the book at any price they wanted, even at a loss. Under Apple's model, the publisher sets the price, so there's no retailer discount.

Why Tech Tangles Are More Painful for Apple Users

Is Apple pain worse than PC pain? I don't know the answer, but it seems to me that a weird mix of personality, expectation and Apple's business model all conspire to create dreadful pain in Apple enthusiasts whenever something with an Apple product goes wrong.

Prince of Persia creator finds lost source code, cues delicate chip fanfare

No, we don't mean the modern interpretation and its moody sequels -- this is the 1989 original. Jordan Mechner created the first Prince of Persia game for the Apple II. However, the source code ended up lost in the sands of time -- until Mechner's dad discovered a box filled with 3.5-inch ProDOS disks. The creator's now attempting to transfer the code across to his MacBook Air and get it working on modern platforms. We just have to remember how to beat our evil reflection.
